DragonCon 2021 AAR

And with that, Dragon Con 2021 is officially over for us. We had a pretty good time, the mask crap was…annoying, mostly because it was hot and I couldn’t breath when I attended a panel. Luckily you didn’t have to wear one when sitting a panel, or on the street.
People were nice, in the con. The street people are a little out of control, and we have some Antifa agitators trying to stir the pot on Saturday. A lot of hate on one side of the street, but even that didn’t dampen the mood all that much.
4HU was well represented, Kim Schoeffel was here and both treated us to a wonderful meal and represented the 4HU at the parade. Also representing the 4HU in the parade were Casey Moops and Will Dickson (we apologize for forgetting your last name).
Rob Marshal said attendance was capped at 40k, and that includes virtual, and you could tell. The hotels were never crowded, and even at its busiest (sunday) the dealer room had plenty of room. Most of the vendors said it was a good show, some said their best.
I had four panels on sci-fi lit and apoc rising, always grateful for the hard working directors and volunteers. This year was triply hard because they were heavily short handed.
Speaker had a small get together one night, and that was wonderful. Had many fascinating discussions with Monalisa Foster, Dr. Evil Penguin, Oz, and others. The kind of general sciencey bullshit session that makes a con fun for me. If you’re going to get in a good natured argument, do it with people smarter than you.
Unsure about my future with DragonCon, I always feel conflicted afterwards. Yeah, it’s kinda fun and seeing some people you only see at DC is awesome, but it’s extremely expensive and as an introvert, it’s a 5 day assault on my personality. Plus since I don’t drink anymore, I feel even more like an outsider whose presence is only tolerated. More on that sometime, maybe.
Special thanks to Casey Moops for providing us with the room, and our friends in Glen Rose TX for the plane tickets!
We’ll see about DC 2022, a lot depends on income, the mask stuff going away, and what attendance will be like.
We hope you all have had a good summer and are looking forward to seeing you all at a convention soon.
